As a young bloke from Melbourne in his early twenties, it’s safe to say that I’ve had my share of big nights out. One of the largest I’ve ever had was two weekends ago and I’m not lying when I say that I’m still recovering from it. That’s when you know it was a good one.

One problem though, when I arrived home at around 6:00am I realised I needed to let out what I put in. I knew it was better to do this outside rather than inside, but I also didn’t want my parents coming out in an hour’s time to get the newspaper and see what I had gotten up to. So I did what every young man does, and I did my business in the sewer drain. As you can imagine, this resulted in a blocked sewer drain. Melbourne sewers certainly aren’t new, and I guess this was the final straw for the sewer near me.

It was pretty obvious that I had blocked the sewer and so I had to sheepishly wake my parents up and tell them what happened. I didn’t want to leave it in the state it was in case it completely corroded the front of our property or something. I don’t know what a blocked sewer can do but I really don’t want to find out.

Understandably, my parents were furious. There was a lot of talk about how I needed to get my life together and that staying out this late every weekend is an embarrassment. I stood there and copped it because I knew there was no point arguing when I had just destroyed the front of the house.

My parents made me responsible for calling someone to do the drain unblocking. Near Essendon, fortunately, that’s not too difficult a task, and I was able to get someone to come and unblock our drains that day. The fact that they came out on a Sunday cost me a significant amount of money, but I knew it needed to be done.
